Just like regular oil changes for your car, keeping up with regular home maintenance tasks will keep you from future headaches and wasted money. Summer maintenance is one of the most enjoyable, as it is a time to focus on the exterior of your home, while getting some sunshine as well.
It can be intimidating to think about all the various tasks, especially if you’re a new homeowner. The good news is that you can do the majority of it on your own without much experience. In order to maximize your efficiency and actually get all the tasks done, you might want t o create a home maintenance calendar for yourself or use our own one. Here are some Summer tasks that you can start with.
Inspect and possibly change out HVAC filters: Experts believe that filters should be changed monthly. For smaller families without pets or allergies, you’ll likely be okay changing the filters every 2-3 months. If the filter is dirty, change it out, otherwise it would be wise to inspect them again next month.
Test your smoke alarms: With something as important as this, you cannot be too careful.
Inspect plumbing for leaks, clean aerators and faucets: Go around to all your faucets and toilets and check for any small leaks. If you have poor water pressure from a faucet, the aerator is the likely culprit and it’s an extremely easy fix. Don’t know how… Google It!
Clean out the gutters: They’ve likely accumulated leaves from the Fall and grime/sediment from the Winter snow and/or rains.
Take care of any insect problems you may have: Summer is their playground. You probably won’t have to look too hard to notice any insect problems. Ants, spiders, months, you name it, they are all common and fairly easy to take care of. Keep cobwebs clear and make sure all your doors close tightly.
Clean and repair deck/patio as needed: It generally just needs a good washing, or maybe some re-staining. Check for any loose boards and repair.
Clean the garage: Cleaning the garage should be a Summer ritual for every man. Keeping it clean and tidy will extend it’s life and it often gets neglected of regular care.
Needless to say, this is not a complete list of all the things you can do for your home, but the more you keep your hand on the maintenance the happier you will be when you want to sell it one day or refinance.
